What is the best kona coffee

What is the Best Kona Coffee Anyway?

The Best Kona Coffee.

As a blogger of all things kona coffee, the question people ask me the most is this: “what’s the best kona coffee?”. It’s a simple and fair question, and yet I have trouble answering it.
Why? For one, it depends on the time of day. I prefer brighter, more tart coffees in the morning and then I will go for smoother, darker and more chocolaty tasting coffees in the afternoon. It also depends on what your taste preferences are: do you like smooth, nutty coffees or floral, earthy type coffees? There’s great representatives of both in the spectrum of kona coffee.
Also, there’s so much choice. I’ve sampled a few dozen kona coffees, but since there’s over 600 kona coffee farms (not to mention Ka’u, Oahu, Maui and Kauai farms!). I’m still going through all the coffees. But in order for a coffee to even be considered as one of my top picks, it has to meet the following criteria:

  • It has to be 100% Kona Coffee. ‘Kona Blends’ are 10% kona and 90% crappy ‘filler’ coffee.
  • The coffee must be made up of the higher kona grades (i.e Extra-Fancy Beans, Fancy, Peaberry)
  • It’s gotta be smooth – I love smooth coffees. A little bite of acidity is okay, but on the whole I like coffee that goes down smooth.

I have my favorite ‘go-to’ kona coffees, that’s for sure. There are some coffees that have been reliably great from year to year.

After thinking about it, I’ve rounded my favorites down to just one go-to coffee that serves me best no matter the time of day or mood I’m in. It’s the one that never fails to remind me that I’m drinking an incredibly smooth kona coffee. And that coffee is:

1. Koa Coffee’s Estate Medium Roast

best kona coffee

I’ve already written a review of Koa’s peaberry roast, but the Koa Estate Medium Roast is my go-to coffee mainly because it has a similar bright acidity while managing to have the subtle cocoa notes that I like so much. Many people prefer the Koa dark roast because it lessens the acidity. I respect that, but I like coffee that ends with a clean finish. Plus, it’s not like we’re talking about Starbucks breakfast blend, or any other super-acidic coffee that will leave your stomach in pain. An acidic kona coffee is probably less acidic than any single African coffee (this region is known for its bright and citrusy coffees).
Koa’s Estate Medium Roast is also a good deal cheaper than the peaberry kona roast: $27/pound for the medium roast, compared to $40/pound for the peaberry. I also joined their monthly coffee club, so it actually works out to $24 per pound. I drink a fair amount of kona coffee, and this price is one of the most budget friendly kona coffees around.

Why this Coffee?

For one, this Estate coffee mixes the top three grades of kona coffee: extra-fancy, fancy and kona number 1 (with an inclincation towards extra-fancy) in this coffee. These coffee beans are the largest, most pure coffee beans (click here for more info about kona coffee grades). These coffee beans hold the most moisture and, hence, the most flavor.

How I Brew It:

How you brew coffee can be as important as the coffee itself. Regular drip coffee makers filter out the natural flavor-creating oils of the coffee. I use the French Press to brew coffee mostly, since it preserves the natural oils in your coffee. It also enables you to detect all the subtle flavor notes of coffee that can sometimes be lost in the coffee brewing process.

Kona Coffee

More Notable Hawaiian Coffees:

It would be a disservice to exclude all the other great kona and other hawaiian coffees available right now. These are my picks for coffees that have served me well in the past. Again, coffee flavor is a matter of personal choice, but hopefully you will find the right coffee for you.

2. Kona Nightingale Coffee from ‘Coffees of Hawaii’

kona nightingale coffee - best kona coffees

Whereas Koa coffee is very smooth, Kona’s Nightingale coffee is much more chocolaty and fruity. It’s kind of a blackcurrant type of flavor. The aroma is amazing and is unlike any kona coffee aroma I’ve sampled before. The ‘nightingale’ name makes perfect sense now, as the coffee reminds me of chocolate covered blueberries. Come to think of it, that would be the perfect pairing for this coffee.

Best Ka’u Coffee: Rusty’s Hawaiian 100% Ka’u Peaberry Coffee

Best kau coffee rusty peaberry medium roast

Ka’u coffee has been making waves in the coffee world recently. The relatively new coffee region has won numerous coffee tasting competitions. This coffee by Rusty’s is my favorite because it has a mixture of chocolate and caramelly notes to start. These flavors then give way to a citrusy and floral aftertaste that is truly relaxing. Drinking a cup of this truly is an experience.

Best Maui Coffee: Pōhaku O Kā’anapali

best maui coffee
Most people are surprised to hear than Maui has a robust community of coffee farms. Centered mainly in Ka’anapali, these coffees are grown at a lower altitude than most Hawaiian coffees but the resulting spicy and fruity flavors are quite tasty. The Pohaku o Ka’anpali (I don’t want to type that again) coffee is a rich, sweet coffee with caramelly notes. For me it’s a definite afternoon coffee as it’s silky smooth texture makes for a great coffee companion while working on the computer.

There you have it. This list is not meant to be ‘exhaustive’ by any means, and it reflects my own personal preferences for coffee as anything. If you know what kind of coffee you like, what kind of flavors, then by all means try a few of these coffees, or even a few different roasts of one coffee company just to see what you like. We’re all on a coffee journey.

verismo 580 review

Verismo 580 Review

Starbucks Verismo 580 Review

If you’ve been in a Starbucks in the past couple of months you may have noticed the Verismo 580 brewers on display. The Verismo machines are Starbucks’ attempt to enter the world of single-cup brewers, which you may have noticed is a rapidly expanding market.
Starbucks actually used to sell Tassimo machines in their stores, but have replaced them with their ‘in-house’ Verismo machines (which are actually repurposed K-Fee machines from Switzerland). This way Starbucks is able to make sure that the espresso beverages they use end up tasting as close to their cafe-produced counterparts as possible.
Verismo 580 review
Most of your favorite Starbucks beverages are represented: the latte, vanilla latte, mocha, and caramel macchiato are available as pods + syrups.
The use of milk was actually a pleasant surprise. Starbucks says that they teamed up with a German company that’s able to separate the water out of the milk in a natural process. The result is that we don’t have to worry about that ‘powdered milk’ taste and instead you get a latte at home that’s almost indistinguishable from freshly frothed 2% milk at the cafe.

Using the Verismo:

When you first turn on the machine, you must run a rinse cycle first. It only took about 12 seconds, but it will warm the machine up and make for a hotter beverage.
Tip: – Put your coffee cup on the tray during the rinse cycle. It will pre-heat your coffee cup, which reduces heat loss and will make for a tastier beverage.

You insert the desired coffee pod in the top of the machine, and then press the silver handle down. Then you press one of three buttons: milk/espresso/coffee; This makes sure that the right temperature and pressure is used. I have large 16 oz. mugs, so for the milk pods I actually hold it down a few extra seconds to get more volume out of the latte.

After the coffee brews the pods are dispensed to a tray in the back, which can hold about 8-10 empty pods before it needs to be emptied.

You also need to do a rinse cycle after every use. Considering that the brewer makes milk-based beverages, I don’t see it as a problem and will happily keep rinsing the machine to prevent milk from damaging the machine.

Beverage Quality:

For this review I tried out the Pike Place Roast, House Blend and the Latte Pods.

  • Pike Place Roast
  • – Of the drip coffees, Pike Place and Verona are my two favorites. Pike Place is smooth with nutty notes. When I tried it in the Verismo, it was definitely smooth tasting coffee, but the nutty notes weren’t as easy to detect.

  • House Blend – I normally don’t like House Blend: it’s too acidic and it tends to give me a stomache afterwards. The pod version wasn’t nearly as acidic tasting, but it also didn’t stand out in any particular way. House is a ‘balanced’ coffee, meaning that nothing in particular stands out. The pod-version definitely lived up to its reputation.
  • Latte Pods – These packages are actually half espresso pods and half milk pods. The whole process took about 30 seconds, and was quite tasty. I normally don’t drink plain lattes, but the latte foam was quite tasty. There wasn’t a noticeable difference between the foam at Starbucks and the foam made here. I think it’s actually amazing that they’ve managed to make a milk-based beverage this tasty.

Overall:

If you want high quality lattes at home but don’t want to froth the milk yourself, this is definitely the Brewer to buy. The lattes taste better than Tassimo’s, and you can run the milk pods through longer to get a bigger latte out of your pod (without diminishing the taste). The espresso roast is also top notch. You could use this machine purely as an espresso maker if you have a milk frother of your own.
The cost per latte is $1.62, which isn’t bad considering you’re getting a $5 beverage at home each and every time.

For the drip coffees, however, the taste is not quite as good as the cafe. If you’re only going to be brewing drip coffee, then there’s no reason to get the Verismo when you could just as easily get a Keurig Brewer (Starbucks sells K-cups as well) for about $80 cheaper.

While you can only use Starbucks pods with the Verismo machine, with a little creativity (and flavored syrups) you can make almost any espresso beverage you can think of.

Best Single Serve Coffee Makers

Best Single Serve Coffee Makers

The Best Single Serve Coffee Makers

Being able to brew a single cup of coffee with a push of a button is a precious time saver. No wonder then that single cup coffee makers have been surging in popularity over the past few years. What started out as a Keurig-dominated field has grown to include Tassimo, Nespresso, and Starbucks owned Verismo. Instead of just coffee, now you can brew almost any kind of latte, cappuccino, or mocha you can order at a cafe. It’s hard to argue with convenience!

Of course each of these coffee makers has their own ‘ecosystem’ with proprietary ‘k-cups’, ‘t-discs’ and other pods that are incompatible with their competitors machines. For each machine we’ll mention how wide a selection of coffee you can get with each coffee maker, as well as ways you can ‘get around’ their ecosystem!

So the big question is: which coffee maker is best? We have ranked the single coffee makers according to quality of beverages (i.e. tastiness), Convenience (i.e. how much clean up and maintenance is needed) and Speed (i.e. how fast they brew).

1. Verismo 580 Brewer

verismo 580 single serve coffee maker

Starbucks stores used to carry the Tassimo coffee machines, but decided to manufacture their own single serve brewers that were specifically designed to brew Starbucks brand coffees. You can enjoy lattes, Americanos, as well as Starbucks’ signature coffees like Pike Place Roast and Guatemala Antigua.
Pros – This machine is fast. You do a rinse cycle to warm up the machine (and your coffee mug) and then brew your beverage of choice. The whole process can take under a minute. The machine is also slim and doesn’t take up much space on the counter. The milk-based beverages are also quite tasty: comparable to what you would get in a Starbucks on any given morning (minus thte trip). The milk is not the awful tasting ‘powdered milk’ you’ll find in many other pods, and when you brew a coffee it tastes quite good. Not quite as good as milk that’s freshly aerated, mind you, but quite good considering you just pushed a button.
Cons – Need to flush out the system after every use (with milk involved, it’s understandable). The front tray isn’t adjustable, which means you need to remove it to brew a standard-sized beverage. This means you have an extra piece that you need to put away in the cupboard.
Overall – There are upsides and downsides to specificity: the Starbucks based beverages are quite tasty, but you can only brew Starbucks’ beverages in this machine. If you like having a Starbucks beverage each morning but want to skip the long lines/disinterested Baristas, this coffee maker is a great solution.

Tassimo T45 Coffee Maker

Tassimo T45 - best single serve coffee makers

Whereas Keurig focuses on making drip coffees, Tassimo focuses on making a variety of beverages like lattes, caramel macchiatos, hot chocolate, and more. It does this task by having specialized bar-codes on the side of T-Discs (the type of pod Tassimo machines use). The bar-codes instruct the machine on the right amount of water and pressure needed to make an ideal tasting beverage every time.
Pros – The milk-based beverages are quite tasty (they use the same ultra-pasteurization technique as the Verismo pods). They also have a much wider selection of beverages and manufactuers to choose from. The built-in water filtration also ensures that you get a consistent tasting cup every time.
Cons – In an effort to save space, the water tank is 61oz. It isn’t tiny by any means, but it means frequent fill ups. The instructions for beverages are also for 8oz., so I ended up using two T-discs for every beverage. I didn’t mind it, but it can add up. (you could just add hot water to top it off, but I’m far too fussy for that!).
Overall – If you’re looking to make lots of milk-based beverages but don’t like the limited choices that the Starbucks Verismo offers you, then this is a great option.

3. Nespresso Citiz C110 Espresso Maker

nexpresso citiz c110 - best single serve coffee makers

Imagine if you could have pure espresso shots in your home without having to grind beans, pull the shot or clean up the resulting ‘hockey pucks’? The Citiz gives you the convenience of a push button espresso machine and costs less than most low-end manual espresso machines. The Citiz is uses eco-friendly aluminum capsules to make espresso *you don’t have to worry about storage temperature or anything like that). The Citiz has developed quite the following in Europe, where it’s convenience and ultra-modern look are a perfect fit in European lofts.
Pros: – This is the best tasting espresso of all the single-cup coffee makers. The Citiz even gives you the option of regular or ‘long’ espresso shots, which is a nice feature since I tend to order my Americano long.
Cons: – It makes espresso really well, but this model does not do milk-beverages. You can get the ” target=”_blank”>Nespresso Citiz + Milk for $299, which also features a milk frother.
Overall: – This coffee maker has the best tasting espresso (and looks amazing), but it’s limited in what it can do. If you’re looking for a convenient and high quality espresso machine, this is a great option. If you get the Citiz + Milk, you will also be able to make your own lattes and cappuccinos.

4. Keurig B-65 Brewing System

Keurig B60 - best single cup coffee makers

Anyone who has worked in an office environment in the past few years has probably encountered a Keurig Brewing Machine. The first major single-serving brewing system to hit North American shelves uses proprietary K-cups for their brewers. Most major coffee companies (including Starbucks) sells their coffee in K-cup format. Keurig is known for brewing coffee, but has also expanded their K-cup line to include hot chocolate, tea, and cider.
Pros: – If you want a great tasting cup of coffee in under a minute, you can’t go wrong with the Keurig. You have a wide selection of coffees to choose from. Plus if you get a reusable ‘Solofill’ cup, you can use any freshly ground coffee you want in your brewer. You can also have hot water instantly at the press of a button (for soup, or tea). Because K-cups are so ubiquitous now, the cost has come down and it’s not a very budget friendly way to get a quick cup of coffee.
Cons: – Keurig hasn’t become a viable machine for making milk-based beverages yet. They have come out with the ‘Keurig Vue’ machines, but reviews are underwhelming and there aren’t many milk-based K-cups available.
Overall: – While the drip coffee is not as high quality as the Verismo, you have hundreds of options (not just Starbucks’ coffees). It’s a great device to have in your kitchen, as you can have instant coffee whenever you want. The water tank is also quite large, so you won’t be needing to refill it all that often.

5. Nescafe Dolce Gusto Piccolo Coffee Maker

Nescafe Dolca Gusto Piccolo - single serve coffee maker

Like the Nespresso coffee maker, Nescafe has a ‘vertical integration’ where they make the coffee makers and the capsules. The result is that, as tasty as some of the drinks are, you can only use Nescafe beverages. You can check out their website to see their selections (I recommend the Caramel Latte Macchiato). They do have a couple dozen options (including iced coffee!), but you are stuck in that ecosystem.
Pros: – The Piccolo is the most budget friendly of the Nescafe machines, and it looks adorable. It has the shape of a penguin. It is convenient to use and looks good doing it. Some of the sweeter drinks are quite tasty.
Cons: – The milk used is powdered milk, which means that there’s a certain aftertaste that I didn’t like. The sweeter beverages overshadowed it, but overall I found Nescafe’s lattes to be inferior to Tassimo or Verismo. The beverages also took a long time to pour: about 90 seconds overall.
Overall: – While the milk-based beverages suffer from Nescafe using powdered milk, the machine is a budget friendly option for people looking for single serve espresso beverages without heading out to a cafe. If you’re going to use your coffee maker mainly for drip coffee, then a Keurig would be the more budget friendly option long term (when you add up the cost of capsules vs. K-cups).
